Pet-a-Pet

Pet-a-Pet is a program where our volunteers take their own pets to nursing homes and long term care units to visit with the residents as pet therapy. Frequently, these pets were originally adopted from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay so it is an excellent way for these pets to pay their community back for supporting the animals.

To an elderly or terminally ill person who loves pets but can no longer have one, petting a cat or having their hand licked by a dog makes a huge difference in their quality of life even if it is just for that one moment. The smiles on their faces say it all.

In order to be a part of this program you must first complete a volunteer application and attend an orientation if you have not already done so. Please refer to our Volunteer Page for further information on becoming a volunteer at http://www.humanesocietytampa.org/volunteer/becoming/.

You will be visiting a nursing home with your own personal dog or cat, not a shelter animal. You know your pet better than anyone & can help determine if he or she is a suitable candidate.  Current shot records are required, and dogs will need to be SAFER (aggression assessment) tested by a qualified HSTB staff member.

Thanks again for your interest in volunteering. This is such an important program, and the rewards are amazing.  Please read more about the Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy and Potential Therapy Dog Candidates. If you know of any nursing homes or assisted living facilities that would be interested in the Pet-A-Pet program, please have them contact us.

Please keep in mind that the program is extremely full, and your patience is appreciated while finding placement for you and your pet.

For more information or if you would like to arrange someone to visit your facility, contact jwilson@humanesocietytampa.org or call Jeanette at (813) 774-4306.
