This Thanksgiving we are so very grateful for the strong individual and community support that has allowed us to save thousands of animals, either through giving them shelter and finding them homes, or healing their illnesses and injuries at our hospital. Every dollar given, every moment of volunteer time donated, and every good word said on our behalf has a direct and positive impact on animals in need. As we gather with friends and family over this holiday, we count you among our most valued partners and acknowledge your gifts with thanksgiving.
Most importantly, we are thankful for the animals who bless us each and every day with their resilient spirits, childlike antics, and fierce determination to put the past to rest and start anew. They teach us so much, and we are grateful.
Please note that both our shelter and the Animal Health Center will be closed for Thanksgiving. We will reopen for normal business hours on Friday, November 27.
World’s Best Cat Litter (WBCL) held a #GiveLitter competition in which shelters from across the nation submitted videos highlighting their cat adoption programs to the company for consideration. Three finalists were chosen- Cat Town Cafe & Adoptions (Oakland, CA), Merrimack River Feline Rescue (Salisbury, MA), and Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Our videos were featured on WBCL’s website and supporters were asked to vote for their group’s video. Votes were solicited from November 16 through November 22 at midnight. The organization with the most video votes would receive 15,000 pounds of litter with second place receiving 10,000 pounds and third place receiving 5,000 pounds.
On this Monday before Thanksgiving, we are extremely grateful to all of our supporters, Facebook and Twitter followers, staff, volunteers, friends and fans who diligently voted for us! The race was close and the competitors worthy and we are very pleased that ALL participants will receive a free supply of litter.
The 15,000 pounds that our shelter will receive will save us several thousand dollars and last for more than 7 months. What a blessing for our cats!

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay recently launched ‘Break Time Buddies’, a program aimed at the workplace to promote awareness of the positive effect pets have on our mental and physical health and to raise money for homeless pets while giving them a break from the shelter.
For a small donation, Tampa Bay businesses, large and small, can arrange a break time where adorable adoptable puppies and kittens come to the workplace to visit with staff. Employees get a chance to relax and have fun, while feeling re-energized and ready to tackle the rest of the day. These “breaks” also offer a wonderful opportunity for our pets to get out of the shelter and receive some extra attention and affection. It is a perfect enrichment opportunity for both people and pets!
If you are interested in hosting a Break Time Buddies session, please contact Ornella Varchi at 813-876-4150 or email SpecialEvents@humanesocietytampa.org.
Did you know that your investments could save a life at the HSTB? As we near the end of the year, please consider a donation of appreciated stock, or bonds or even mutual funds. You will receive a deduction on your taxes and avoid the capital gains tax. Your gift will help so many animals to find a forever home and be home for the holidays. For more information please contact Chief Development Officer Karen Ryals at 813-774-4313 or KarenR@humanesocietytampa.org. To make a donation, CLICK HERE.
We’re proud to partner with Pets For Patriots to make the joys of pet ownership achievable and affordable to members of the military community. ABC Action News’ Ashley Yore visited with us on Veteran’s Day to learn more about the program.
