Florida: Stop Forcing Tracks to Race Greyhounds!
FL SB 1594/HB 1145—Greyhound Racing
Sponsors: Senator Maria Lorts Sachs (D-3); Rep. Dana Young (R-57)
ASPCA Position: Support
Action Needed: Please email your state senator and representative and urge them to support SB 1594 and HB 1145, bills that will cause a significant decline in Greyhound racing and move us closer to getting rid of it completely.
Good news: Legislation that will help eventually end dog racing in the Sunshine State is being considered in the Florida Legislature. Senate Bill 1594 and House Bill 1145 will change Florida’s gambling law to give dog track operators the choice of whether or not they want to conduct dog races. Amazingly, current law mandates that gambling facilities that have dog tracks actively use them for races—even if the facility’s owner doesn’t want to! This mandatory racing requirement forces dogs to endure the inhumane conditions common at so many tracks while it wastes taxpayer dollars to regulate a dying industry.
SB 1594 and HB 1145 are not outright bans on dog racing. Instead, they would remove the “dog racing mandate” in state gambling law, which would result in many racing venues choosing to close up and, ultimately, bring about an end to dog racing in Florida. This legislation does not affect other forms of gambling, such as slot machines and table games, which are more profitable than dog racing and do not cause animals to suffer.
Florida is one of only seven states still racing dogs, but it operates more tracks than all the other states combined. Passage of this “decoupling” legislation here will be a huge victory for Greyhounds everywhere!
